The old phone lines are switching off.

The copper phone network (PSTN and ISDN) is being switched off across the UK, with the final deadline in January 2027. Every business on a traditional line has to move to a digital one, and many in St Albans already have, because Openreach stopped selling new copper lines years ago.

The move itself is simple when it's planned. It's also a good moment to look again at what you're paying, because today's systems often cost about the same as an old line rental, or less, and do far more.

It's not only desk phones. Before you switch, it's worth checking anything else plugged into a phone line, such as alarms, lift lines, door entry and older card machines, so nothing stops working on the day. We check that as part of the move.

What a modern phone system gives you.

  • Answer anywhere.Calls to your office number ring on desk phones, laptops and mobiles, so the call reaches whoever's free, wherever they are.
  • Keep your numbers.Your 01727 number (or any UK number) moves across with you. Customers won't notice anything, apart from getting through faster.
  • An AI receptionist if you need one.Xelion, the system we normally recommend, offers Xeli as an add-on: an AI assistant that can answer calls when you're busy, take messages and pass enquiries to the right person. It's £400 to set up, then £20 a month.
  • See who's free before you transfer. One app and one dashboard for the whole team.
  • WhatsApp in the same place.Customer WhatsApp messages land alongside your calls, so the whole team can see and reply.
  • Works with Microsoft Teamsor as its own app on PCs and mobiles, whichever suits your team.

Why use us for phones?

Phone problems are often network problems: a busy broadband line, a WiFi black spot, or a firewall setting. Most phone companies can't see past the handset. We look after networks and IT every day, so we set phones up with the network in mind and can fix both ends if something goes wrong.

You don't have to use us for IT to use us for phones. Plenty of customers just have their phones with us.

How the move works.

  1. Send us a recent phone bill. We'll show you what you could have for the same money or less.
  2. We check what's connected. Phones, numbers, call routing, and anything else on your lines.
  3. We set it up alongside your old system, so there's never a day without working phones.
  4. We move your numbers on an agreed date and show your team how it all works.
  5. We stay on to sort anything that comes up.

Questions we get about phones.

Can I keep my existing number?

Yes. Geographic numbers like 01727, 01923 and 020, plus 0800 and 03 numbers, can all be moved across.

Do I need new handsets?

Not always. Many people just use the app on their laptop and mobile. If you like a desk phone, we'll supply ones that work with the new system.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Calls can automatically go to mobiles, so you don't miss them. For busy offices we can add a backup connection.

How much does it cost?

BT VoIP is £21, Microsoft Teams calling £23 and Xelion £26 per user a month, with calls to UK landlines and mobiles included, on a 12-month contract, plus VAT. The quickest way to see what you'd pay is to send us a recent bill and we'll compare like for like.

What about the 2027 switch-off?

If you're still on a traditional line, now's the time to move. Planning it avoids a rushed switch near the deadline.
